General information
Greece is a Southern European country known for Athens, ancient sites, islands, the Aegean and Ionian seas, mountains, monasteries, olives, tavernas, wine and a strong Mediterranean atmosphere. It lies in the southern Balkans, and its character is shaped by both mainland regions and hundreds of islands. The capital Athens is a historic metropolis beneath the Acropolis, where antiquity meets a chaotic modern city, cafes, markets and nightlife. Other important places include Thessaloniki, the Peloponnese, Meteora, Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Zakynthos, Epirus and Chalkidiki. Greece suits travelers who want sea, islands, history, food, mountains, beach holidays, a slower pace and evenings where nobody rushes because the taverna is still alive anyway.
Travel
Athens is ideal for lovers of history, museums, viewpoints, neighborhoods such as Plaka and Psiri and urban life that is a little noisy but very alive. Thessaloniki offers a younger, northern and food-focused atmosphere. The Peloponnese attracts with ancient sites, mountains, beaches and towns such as Nafplio, Mycenae and Epidaurus. Meteora is one of the country’s most impressive places thanks to monasteries perched on rock pillars. The islands each have their own character: Crete is large and varied, Santorini dramatic and famous, Naxos and Paros more relaxed, Corfu greener and Ionian, Rhodes historic and sunny. Greece is excellent for island hopping, beach holidays, ancient sites, mountain trips, food travel and long slow journeys outside the peak season.
Life and work
Life in Greece is social, outdoor-oriented and strongly shaped by weather, family, the sea and local rhythm. Athens has the strongest job market, especially in tourism, services, technology, administration, education, culture, transport and international companies. Thessaloniki is an important university and commercial center of the north, while islands and coastal areas depend heavily on the season. Costs vary greatly: Athens and popular islands can be expensive, while smaller towns and mainland areas are more affordable. English works well in tourism and among younger people, but Greek is important for deeper integration and everyday life away from tourist places. Greece suits people who want sun, sea, social life, history and a slower rhythm, but can also handle bureaucracy, summer heat and seasonal differences in work and prices.
Culture and food
Greek culture is deeply connected with family, Orthodoxy, the sea, ancient heritage, music, festivals, tavernas and long shared meals. Greeks can combine pride in the past with a very lively present, where people talk a lot, sit outside and treat food as a social event. The cuisine is simple, sunny and strong in fresh ingredients. Typical foods include souvlaki, gyros, moussaka, Greek salad, feta, olives, tzatziki, spanakopita, dolmades, fish, seafood, yogurt with honey, baklava, ouzo and local wines. Every island and region has its own specialties. Greece can be loud, hot and a little chaotic, but when you sit by the sea in the evening with a plate of meze, most worries start to feel like badly timed emails.
Practical notes
In Greece, pay close attention to driving, scooters, heat, beaches and local customs outside tourist resorts. Alcohol is widely available, and wine, ouzo and tsipouro are part of the culture, but public drunkenness, noise in nightlife areas or inappropriate behavior near churches and monuments can lead to fines or uncomfortable situations. Smoking is common, but restrictions apply in indoor public spaces, restaurants, bars, public transport and workplaces; practice may feel looser than the rules, but do not rely on that. Topless sunbathing is common or tolerated on some tourist beaches, while naturism belongs mainly on designated or unofficially known beaches; on family beaches, smaller islands or in more conservative places, be more discreet. Cannabis, THC products and other illegal drugs can lead to serious legal trouble. For CBD, kratom and similar products, always check current rules and exact composition, especially before flying or taking a ferry. When driving, expect usually 50 km/h in towns, 90 to 110 km/h outside built-up areas depending on road type, and 130 km/h on motorways, unless signs say otherwise. The standard drink-driving limit is 0.5 g/l, but stricter limits apply to novice and professional drivers and motorcyclists. Motorways are often tolled at booths, and on islands it is worth watching for narrow roads, gravel, unsigned bends, goats and scooters appearing exactly where you least expect them.
