General information
Athens, Attica and the Saronic Islands are the classic starting point for Greece. The area combines ancient history, lively neighbourhoods, ferries, coastal trips and quick island escapes.
Trips and nature
The landscape is dry, sunny and coastal, with beaches along the Athenian Riviera, Cape Sounion and the nearby Saronic Islands. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.
Food and atmosphere
The Acropolis, ancient Athens, Byzantine churches, museums and neighbourhoods such as Plaka and Monastiraki create a dense cultural mix. Food means souvlaki, meze, feta, olives, fish, coffee and long evenings outside.
Transport and stay
Athens has the main international airport, metro, trams, buses and the port of Piraeus. A car is not needed in the city, but it helps for Attica and Cape Sounion.
