Ljubljana and Central Slovenia are the easiest gateway to the country, combining a relaxed capital, river life, cafés, markets, castle views and quick trips in almost every direction.
Trips and nature
The region is green and compact, with forests, rivers, marshes, hills and countryside very close to the city. Ljubljana Marshes are a notable natural area nearby.
Food and atmosphere
Ljubljana mixes Central European, Mediterranean and Yugoslav layers, with Plečnik architecture, a lively market culture and a very walkable centre.
Transport and stay
Ljubljana has the main rail and bus hub. A car is not needed in the city, but useful for day trips and rural Central Slovenia.
