General information
Malta’s main island is the cultural and transport centre of the archipelago, dense with fortresses, Baroque towns, British traces, Arabic linguistic echoes and busy stone streets.
Trips and nature
The island is dry, rocky and coastal. Beaches are often small, but bays, cliffs and sea caves give the coast strong character. Spring and autumn are best.
Food and atmosphere
Valletta, Mdina, the Three Cities and the megalithic temples create an unusually dense historical landscape. Food includes pastizzi, rabbit, fish, ftira, capers, olives and local wine.
Transport and stay
Malta has one main airport and a dense bus network, though traffic can be slow. Driving is on the left; a car helps for cliffs and less accessible places.
