General information

Eastern Serbia and the Iron Gates are a region of the Danube, gorges, fortresses, archaeology, caves and lesser-known nature.

Trips and nature

The Danube is the main theme. The Iron Gates gorge is large, forested and excellent for viewpoints, boats and road trips. Inland areas add caves, hills and wine around Negotin.

Food and atmosphere

Golubac Fortress, Lepenski Vir and Roman heritage give the region historical weight. Food is Danube and Balkan: fish, grilled meat, wine, cheeses, peppers, soups and home cooking.

Transport and stay

A car is the best way to explore eastern Serbia. Roads along the Danube are scenic but slower. The area suits 3 to 5 days of road trip, fortresses and river landscapes.
