General information
Apulia, Basilicata and Calabria form southern Italy with long coastlines, olive groves, white towns, cave dwellings, Greek traces, beaches and a slower pace. Apulia is the most accessible and popular, Basilicata is rougher and more inland, while Calabria is less polished but often beautiful along the coast. Key places include Bari, Lecce, Alberobello, Ostuni, Polignano a Mare, Matera, Taranto, Gargano, Salento, Tropea, Scilla and Aspromonte.
Trips and nature
The region combines the Adriatic, Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas, dry interiors and mountain parks. Salento has beautiful beaches and warm water, Gargano is greener and Calabria adds dramatic coastlines and mountains. Summer is hot and the sea is excellent, but June and September are usually more pleasant than August.
Food and atmosphere
Matera, with its cave districts, is outstanding, and Alberobello is famous for its trulli houses. Lecce is a Baroque jewel of the south, Bari a lively port city and Calabria shows a less tourist-shaped Italy. Food is southern: orecchiette, burrata, olive oil, seafood, focaccia barese, vegetables, spicy Calabrian specialities and Primitivo and Negroamaro wines.
Transport and stay
Bari and Brindisi have airports, larger towns are connected by train, but a car is very useful for villages, beaches, Gargano, Matera and Calabria. The area is ideal for 7 to 14 days, road trips, beaches, food, smaller towns and the warmer south. Infrastructure can be less smooth than in the north, but the experience is rich.
