General information
The Baltic coast, Mecklenburg and Rügen offer a quieter and more resort-oriented northern Germany, with beaches, islands, old Hanseatic towns and relaxed seaside architecture.
Trips and nature
Rügen, Usedom, lagoons, beech forests, chalk cliffs and sandy beaches make this one of Germany’s most appealing coastal regions. The Baltic is calmer than the North Sea.
Food and atmosphere
Hanseatic towns such as Rostock, Stralsund and Wismar add brick Gothic heritage, while seaside resorts preserve elegant nineteenth-century holiday culture.
Transport and stay
Trains reach larger towns and islands, but a car helps for beaches, national parks, villages and off-season travel.
