General information
Sardinia is an island with beautiful sea, a strong identity and landscapes that are not only about beaches. It offers the luxurious Costa Smeralda, a wilder interior, ancient nuraghi towers, towns with Catalan traces, mountain areas and some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. Key places include Cagliari, Alghero, Olbia, Costa Smeralda, La Maddalena, Oristano, Bosa, Nuoro, Supramonte, Cala Gonone and Barumini.
Trips and nature
Sardinia is naturally strong both on the coast and inland. La Maddalena and the eastern coast around Orosei offer clear water, cliffs and coves, while the south has sandy beaches and the interior brings mountains, gorges and pastures. The sea is best from June to October, while spring and September are better for travelling around.
Food and atmosphere
Culturally, Sardinia differs from mainland Italy. The nuraghi show the island’s prehistoric civilisation, Alghero has a Catalan flavour and the interior around Nuoro keeps a strong pastoral tradition. Food is based on pecorino, lamb, porceddu, pane carasau, seafood, Cannonau wine and simple island cooking.
Transport and stay
Sardinia is reached by flights to Cagliari, Olbia or Alghero, or by ferry. A car is very useful because the best beaches, inland areas and archaeological sites are spread out. The island is ideal for 7 to 14 days, beaches, island road trips, families, nature and travellers who want the sea but also character.
