General information
Banat, Timișoara and the south-west are one of Romania’s most multicultural regions, shaped by Romanian, Hungarian, Serbian, German and Habsburg influences. It is a good area for travellers who want elegant cities, borderland history and quieter countryside.
Trips and nature
The region combines plains, vineyards, river valleys, hills and mountain areas towards the Banat Mountains. The Danube gorges and spa landscapes add strong nature appeal.
Food and atmosphere
Timișoara is the main cultural centre, known for large squares, Secession architecture, revolutionary history and a confident urban feel. Smaller towns and villages add Central European and Balkan layers.
Transport and stay
Timișoara has an airport and rail links. A car is useful for the Danube, mountain villages, spas and cross-border routes towards Serbia or Hungary.
