General information
Tuscany, Florence and Umbria are a landscape of Renaissance art, wine, olive groves, hill towns and countryside that looks as if it had been painted before photography existed. Florence is the main cultural magnet, Siena and Lucca add urban beauty, while Umbria offers a quieter and greener alternative. The area includes Florence, Siena, Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano, Chianti, Val d’Orcia, Arezzo, Perugia, Assisi and Orvieto.
Trips and nature
The region is defined by rolling cultural landscapes, vineyards, olive groves, cypress roads, thermal springs and the Apennine foothills. Val d’Orcia is one of Italy’s most beautiful rural landscapes, Chianti is perfect for slow wine stops and Umbria offers wooded hills and quieter countryside. April to June and September to October are the best periods.
Food and atmosphere
Culturally, the area is exceptionally rich. Florence is the city of the Renaissance, with the cathedral, Uffizi, Palazzo Vecchio and Ponte Vecchio. Siena has one of Italy’s most beautiful squares, and Assisi brings a powerful spiritual atmosphere. Food is based on Chianti and Brunello wines, olive oil, pasta, ribollita, bistecca alla fiorentina, truffles, cheeses and simple cooking that needs very little decoration.
Transport and stay
Florence, Pisa, Siena, Perugia and other towns are well connected by train or bus, but a car is very useful for the countryside, vineyards and smaller hill towns. The area is ideal for 5 to 10 days, road trips, art, wine, romance, photography and slow travel. In summer, expect heat and crowds in Florence; the countryside is best outside August.
