General information
Lower Austria surrounds Vienna and works beautifully for slower travel, wine, small towns, abbeys, castles, Danube scenery and easy countryside escapes.
Trips and nature
The Wachau is the star landscape, with vineyards, apricot orchards, river bends and hilltop ruins. The region also has forests, fields and gentle wine country.
Food and atmosphere
Melk Abbey, Krems, Dürnstein, castles and wine villages give Lower Austria strong historical texture. Wine culture is central, especially Grüner Veltliner.
Transport and stay
Many places are reachable by train from Vienna, but a car or bike helps for wine villages, castles and rural routes.
