General information
Southeastern Anatolia and Mesopotamia are one of Turkey’s culturally strongest areas, with ancient sites, stone cities, bazaars, cuisine and Turkish, Kurdish, Arab and Syriac layers.
Trips and nature
The southeast is dry, hot and open. Summer can be extremely hot, so spring and autumn are the best seasons. Nemrut Dağı and the Euphrates add dramatic landscapes.
Food and atmosphere
Göbekli Tepe is an extraordinary prehistoric site, Mardin a stone city overlooking Mesopotamia and Gaziantep a major food capital. Food means baklava, kebabs, lahmacun, pistachios, lentils, spices and markets.
Transport and stay
The region is best reached by domestic flights and explored with buses, a car or a driver. Current safety advice should always be checked, especially near border areas.
