General information
Naples, Campania and the Amalfi Coast show Italy in an intense, noisy, beautiful and slightly chaotic form. Naples has incredible energy, Pompeii and Herculaneum bring ancient tragedy, Vesuvius adds volcanic drama and the Amalfi Coast delivers postcard beauty. Key places include Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, Capri, Ischia, Procida and Caserta.
Trips and nature
The landscape is built around volcanoes, sea, cliffs and islands. Vesuvius dominates the Bay of Naples, Amalfi has steep coastlines and narrow roads, while Capri and Ischia offer island trips and swimming. Summer is hot and crowded; spring and autumn are much better for cities, ruins and the coast.
Food and atmosphere
Naples is one of Italy’s most fascinating cities, even if it is not always polished. Pompeii and Herculaneum are among Europe’s strongest archaeological sites, Caserta has a royal palace and Amalfi a historic maritime tradition. Food is legendary: Neapolitan pizza, sfogliatella, buffalo mozzarella, limoncello, seafood, pasta and espresso taken quickly and seriously.
Transport and stay
Naples has an airport, high-speed trains and good links to Pompeii and Sorrento. Driving in Naples or along the Amalfi Coast is not for the faint-hearted; trains, boats, buses or a sensible scooter are often better. The region is ideal for 5 to 8 days, archaeology, food, islands, coastline and travellers who do not expect sterile order.
