General information
Ireland’s Ancient East is the country’s great historical route, stretching across the east and south-east with prehistoric monuments, medieval towns, castles, abbeys, Viking layers and Norman heritage.
Trips and nature
The landscape is gentler than the west, with river valleys, farmland, low hills, gardens, beaches and historic estates. It is less wild, but very rich in short, rewarding stops.
Food and atmosphere
The Boyne Valley, Newgrange, Trim, Kilkenny, Waterford, monasteries, castles and old market towns make this one of Ireland’s strongest cultural regions. It is ideal for travellers who prefer history with a pint afterwards, což je dost irský kompromis.
Transport and stay
Many towns are reachable by train or bus from Dublin, but a car makes it easier to combine archaeological sites, castles, gardens and smaller places in one route.
