General information

Bergen and the Western Fjords are the classic Norway of steep mountains, waterfalls, ferries, wooden houses and deep blue fjords. Bergen is rainy, charming and one of the best bases for fjord travel.

Trips and nature

The region is dominated by Sognefjord, Hardangerfjord, waterfalls, glaciers, mountains and narrow valleys. Weather changes quickly, but rain is part of the atmosphere.

Food and atmosphere

Bergen’s Bryggen recalls Hanseatic history, while villages and fjord farms show coastal and mountain life. Food includes fish, seafood, brown cheese, lamb, berries and simple hearty dishes.

Transport and stay

Bergen has an airport and railway to Oslo. Fjords are best explored by train, ferry, bus, car or organised scenic routes.
