General information
Northern Scotland, Orkney, Shetland and the Outer Hebrides show Scotland at its most remote: long roads, ferries, islands, wind, peatlands, white beaches, bird cliffs and ancient sites.
Trips and nature
The landscapes are open, oceanic and weather-driven. The Outer Hebrides can look almost tropical in colour, though the water quickly corrects that idea. Orkney and Shetland add cliffs, seabirds and Nordic echoes.
Food and atmosphere
Orkney has major Neolithic sites, Shetland Norse heritage, and the Outer Hebrides Gaelic culture, crofting and Harris Tweed. Food is built around fish, shellfish, lamb, venison, whisky and simple island cooking.
Transport and stay
Travel requires time. A car is useful on the mainland and islands, while ferries and flights need planning. This region is best for slow travel, not a quick detour.
