General information
Rome, Lazio and Central Italy are the classic gateway to the country. Rome is a city of antiquity, Baroque drama, religious history, lively neighbourhoods, noisy scooters, strong food culture and monuments that often appear almost casually around the next corner. The area includes Rome, Tivoli, the Castelli Romani, Ostia Antica, Viterbo, Lake Bracciano, Lake Bolsena and the Etruscan sites of northern Lazio.
Trips and nature
The landscape combines urban parks, volcanic lakes, hills, the Tyrrhenian coast and the countryside of Lazio. Rome itself has large green spaces such as Villa Borghese, the Appian Way and Villa Doria Pamphilj, while the surrounding area is good for lake trips and hill towns. Summer is hot and tiring, while spring and autumn are the best seasons for both the city and day trips.
Food and atmosphere
Culturally, Rome is one of the strongest concentrations of history in Europe. The Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, Trastevere, the basilicas, museums and the Vatican area create a city that can easily fill several visits. Food is proudly Roman: carbonara, amatriciana, cacio e pepe, artichokes, supplì, pizza al taglio, gelato and trattorias where dinner is not meant to be rushed.
Transport and stay
Rome has two main airports, high-speed trains, metro lines, buses and excellent connections across Italy. A car makes little sense inside the city, but it is useful for rural Lazio, lakes and smaller towns. The area is ideal for 4 to 7 days, a first trip to Italy, history, food and a mix of big-city life with short excursions.
