Lake Balaton and Western Transdanubia are Hungary’s classic holiday region, combining beaches, wine hills, spa towns, cycling, sailing and relaxed lakeside towns.

Trips and nature

Balaton is the main landscape, with shallow water, reed beds, beaches and volcanic hills around the north shore. The west adds softer countryside and thermal areas.

Food and atmosphere

Tihany, Keszthely, abbeys, castles and wine villages give the region historical depth beyond summer swimming.

Transport and stay

Trains serve many Balaton towns, especially in summer. A car or bike helps for vineyards, thermal spas and smaller villages.
