Innerleithen: a tougher trail day in the heart of Tweed Valley

Innerleithen is Glentress's more technical 7stanes neighbour, known for steeper forest descents, a red XC loop and DH lines with a bikepark feel.

Innerleithen has a sharper, less family-oriented feel than Glentress. It sits only a short distance away in the Tweed Valley, but the mood is more athletic: the woods are steeper, the trails feel more direct, and many riders come specifically for technical descending, roots and faster sections.

It suits riders who have already visited a few trail centres and want to read terrain rather than simply collect kilometres. The red cross-country loop gives a proper climb and descent, while the downhill lines and bikepark-style areas call for protection, speed control and a willingness to inspect features before committing.

Plan the day with margin. After rain the soil and roots can become demanding, light drops quickly in the trees, and fatigue arrives earlier on technical ground than on smooth flow trails. First-time visitors should start with an easier option and leave the harder sections until they are warmed up.

Innerleithen pairs well with Glentress for a weekend, but trying to ride both hard in one day is rarely the best plan. It works best as a focused sporting outing: check the map and trail status in the morning, ride selected lines during the day, then return to the small valley town base.
